Book Review: The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

Whoa. Just... whoa.

In the post-apocalyptic nation of Panem (was: North America), the wealthy elite in Capitol City keep the 12 Districts (there used to be 13, until the last was destroyed after the Rebellion) in line by hosting The Hunger Games. In reality TV meets the Olympics meets Shirley Jackson's short story The Lottery (which, if you haven't read yet, seriously, go get it), each District must provide 1 boy and 1 girl Tribute to the Capitol each year to compete in the Games where the only way to escape with your life is to win - by taking the lives of all the other Tributes in a bloody, live broadcast direct from the ring to the eyes of the entire nation.

Enter Katniss Everdeen, 16-year-old hunter girl extraordinaire from District 12, who volunteers herself at the Reaping to take her baby sister's place, and Peeta Mellark, the baker's son who Katniss hasn't been able to stop thinking about since his furtive gift of bread saved her family from starvation after her father was killed in a mining accident several years ago. When Katniss and Peeta's prep team decide to present the unlikely pair to the public of Panem as star-crossed lovers, Katniss begins to form a plan of attack that may just save both their lives...

The first in a planned trilogy, The Hunger Games is a horrifying look at the terrible and beautiful potential of human nature. Scary in a whole different way than Halloween, check it out @ the library!
