Book Review: Ship Breaker by Paolo Bacigalupi

Nailer works on the light crew, stripping old shipwrecks of metals in the Gulf of Mexico. He hopes to make quota every day so that he can stay employed. There are not many jobs for kids like him on his island. Practically parent-less after his mother's death, Nailer hopes to striking it rich one day to buy his way out of this life.

Nailer's luck starts to change when he finds some oil on a ship he is salvaging. Close to death, his ability to think fast keeps him alive, and he becomes a hero. Then luck strikes again. After a huge storm, Nailer and his friend Pima find a ship bigger and richer than anything they have ever found before.

If this ship is truly empty, it is salvage, and they are set for life from all the silver and riches of the ship. All this will be theirs, as long as there is no one living on the ship. Searching the ship they find a girl who seems to have died in her bed, except for the fact that she's breathing and has a heartbeat.

Shipbreaker is a fast paced action adventure book that will keep you turning pages and wondering "What could possibly happen next?" Nailer and his friends face dangers I couldn't even imagine. From half-man-half-beast guards that work on the "swank" ships to his own father, it seems like something always takes Nailer away from the comfortable easy life he desires. Recommended for fans of action adventure, dystopian futures and ecological themed books.
