Book Review: You by Charles Benoit

You don't know when it all began, of course looking back there are places you can pinpoint the changes: meeting Zach, not getting into the "smart" high school, the wallet incident or talking with Ashley. But when did it all start?

You are Kyle Chase, sophomore in high school, part of the "hoodie" crowd, and a former smart kid. Your parents are on your case about getting a job, your grades, and being a better example for your little sister, but they haven't really been around to know what is really going on with you. You have a huge crush on Ashley, but don't know what to do next. Your teachers think you might have potential, but you aren't a jock and you don't do your homework, so there isn't much hope for you acadmiclly. Each thing little things that happens to you this year leads to something else, and it all leads you to that moment, where you are covered in blood, surronded by glass.

Charles Benoit spins a fast tale with you right in the center. You is told in the second person so you are Kyle, and you know what he is thinking even if you don't know what happens next. Make sure you have a few hours when you pick You up, as it keeps you in the story the whole time.

Kyle is a normal kid who just doesn't know what to do, and doesn't make the right choices. In fact, you could say he doesn't make any choices, and takes what comes his way. Kyle isn't sure if he even likes his friends, but they are people to hang out with. Even the adults in the book prove to be quick to judge and act they perceive Kyle. I won't say this is a happy story, but it is a engrossing read that will keep you guessing from page one, and thinking well past the end of the story.

Whether you feel bad, angry or sad while reading You, you will react. You will keep you on your toes from page one on, waiting for what is going to happen to Kyle next. Fans of books like 13 Reasons Why or books by Gail Giles will enjoy this one.

I'll see you @ the library!
