Book Review: Gimme a Call by Sarah Mlynowski

It all started when Devi dropped her phone in the fountain at the mall. She was wishing that she could "Go Back in Time" like the woman in the anti-wrinkle ad. Not to stop the aging process (she's only a senior in high school), but to change those big events that might make her life easier. Of course, she would make sure to not date Bryan, the boy she just wasted three years of her life with.

Now, not sure what to do, other than return the watch that was going to be his graduation gift, her phone is in a mess of chlorine and water. She pulls it out, hoping it will work when she presses power and it starts ringing, not sure who she is calling.

Devi is at lunch with her three best friends. It's the beginning of their freshman year of high school, and the phone rings. Thinking it's her sister Maya, she eagerly answers the phone, only to have it be a wrong number. However the calls keep coming, and it turns out the person on the other line might just be her, calling from the future.

Senior Devi (now called Ivy, to help with the confusion) starts calling Freshman Devi to make sure she doesn't make the same mistakes she made. First (and most importantly) is to not get involved with Bryan. Of course, there are other things like doing better in school, keeping her awesome friends and helping her parents out as well. Each little change Devi's life is a big change in Ivy's life. Some are for the good, however some are for the really really bad. As long as they can talk to each other, everything should be okay. Right?

Fun and funny, Gimmie a Call is for anyone who wishes they could change the past. Devi makes a lot of mistakes, and clearly she learned from them. Her friends are great, encouraging her as much as she can encourage them. Bryan is really cute and nice and friendly, and you can see why and how Devi would easily fall in to a relationship with him, even if you think you know why they broke up.

Although there is a time travel aspect, fans of realistic books like Maureen Johnson's Suite Scarlett or Fat Cat by Robin Brande will enjoy the slice of high school life, with a bit of high school, friendship and romance.

I'll see you @ the library!
Katie (Now reading Leverage by Joshua Cohen. Totally intense, and way different from Gimmie a Call's lightness!)
