Book Review: Anya's Ghost by Vera Brosgol

Anya just wants to fit in and be normal.  But with a last name like Borzakovskaya and a mom who keeps making food that's so... Russian, it's hard.  She hates gym, her grades kind of suck, nerdy Dima keeps tryng to be friends with her and there's no way she can be seen with him and his Russian accent, and she's pretty sure that gorgeous basketball star Sear will never notice her, especially since he's dating the gorgeous, perfect Elizabeth.  Also, her best and only friend, Siobhan, is kind of mean to her.

So when Anya falls down a well, it really just seems like one more horrible thing in her horrible life.  But Anya isn't the only one in the well.  She finds herself sharing the dark with a 90-year-old skeleton - and the skeleton's ghost, Emily.  Emily can't get too far from her bones, but she does wake Anya up to yell for help when a guy walks by the well opening.

When Emily appears in the girls' bathroom at school, Anya is shocked and more than a little annoyed - talking to the ghost of some dead girl is not really going to get her noticed in a good way.  Plus, didn't Emily tell her she couldn't leave her bones?  Turns out one of Emily's finger bones ended up in Anya's bag... somehow.  But having Emily around is more useful than Anya anticipated.  That biology test Anya didn't study for?  No problem.  Figuring out Sean's class schedule?  Easy.  Picking out an awesome outfit that's sure to get Sean's attention at a party?  Anya's never had a friend that's so much fun to hang out with.

But when Emily goes all stalker poltergeist on Anya, things start to get pretty creepy.  Anya decides to investigate a little further into her ghost's past, and what she finds sure doesn't sound like the sad story Emily told her about how she ended up in that well.  It seems that Emily has a whole lot more in mind than just helping Anya fit in at school...

If you've ever been embarrassed by your family, wished you were more athletic, wondered why the cute boy you like doesn't notice you, or really wished you had someone to help you out on that bio test, you'll love Anya.  This spooky graphic novel is both hilarious and very, very creepy - so the next time you fall down a well after a really bad day at school, make sure you leave any and all bits of skeleton behind you!
