Book Review: Whale Talk by Chris Crutcher

I've gone back and re-read an oldy but goody by Chris Crutcher.

T.J. Jones (a.k.a. "The Tao Jones." No joke. That's what his mother named him.) is an excellent athlete. An athlete who doesn't play on any of his school's sports teams, which drives the coaches in the sports-obsessed school insane. But when one of the macho football players gives a special needs student a rough time for wearing his dead brother's letterman jacket and the English teacher approaches T.J. about starting a swim team, he gathers together a band of misfits and creates a team of Mermen.

The odds are against the new swim team from the start. Only T.J. H has experience swimming on a team, they do not have a proper pool to practice in, and the coaches of the other winter sports, as well as some of the other athletes, want them to fail. The sport-less jock, the boy with anger management issues, the 300 pounder, the ghost, the geek, and the special needs student all must learn to work together to win the letter jackets that will help them fit in.
