Book Review: The Dead and the Gone by Susan Beth Pfeffer

Alex is at work one night, dreaming of a scholarship to Georgetown, and hoping that he doesn't have to stay too late. At home, his two younger sisters wait for him. His mom hasn't come home from her shift at the hospital yet. His dad is due back soon from his grandmother's funeral in Puerto Rico, and his older brother just shipped out with the Marines. Did I mention that an asteroid has hit the moon, causing it to change the orbit, thus affecting tides, weather and all sorts of other disasters on Earth?

With no word from his mom or dad, and his older brother is about to be stationed in Texas, Alex is now the head of his family. With his faith, what's left of his family and some friends he has to figure out how to survive this new New York. Food is scarce, electricity is rare, and most people seem to want out of the city. Alex and his sisters wait for other family members to return, every day being a little more difficult than the next.

If you enjoy books where teens have to take on extraordinary situations, or books where families need each other to survive, this is a good read for you. It's also a companion book to Life as We Knew It, but you can read this book without reading Life as We Knew It.

I'll see you @ the library!
