Let's Hear it for the Boys: Realistic Fiction Part II

As promised, here are some realistic fiction books starring boys (note the lack of pink on the covers).

First up is Spud by Jon Van de Ruit. Spud is starting boarding school in South Africa, around the fall of the apartheid, and he has some crazy dorm mates, makes some friends and gets into some hilarious trouble. Oh and the sequel: Spud II the Madness Continues is out soon.

For those more adventurous types, check out Peak by Roland Smith. Peak has been climbing for as long as he can remember. Confined to the urban mountains of New York City, he is caught scaling the side of a building. In order to keep copycat climbers from repeating this dangerous task, Peak is sent to live with his dad, in Tibet. This could be the adventure (or disaster) of a lifetime.

For those who like to rock, let me recommend Heavy Metal and You by Christopher Krovatin. Sam is all about heavy metal. It is his life, his love his everything, well except for Melissa, his girlfriend. Melissa is not happy about Sam’s music or his wild ways, and Sam slowly starts to change. Sam is all metal with a heart of gold.

Finally, let me introduce you to a young Chris Crutcher with King of the Mild Frontier. You may know Chris as the author of books such as Whale Talk, Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes and Stotan, however his life didn't start out as an acclaimed author. I dare you not to laugh while reading this book as he writes about his family and way back when. You will never look at a radiator the same way again. I know it's not fiction, but it's Crutcher. He writes awesome realistic fiction, so check his books out.

I'll see you @ the Library!
Katie (Currently reading A Lion Among Men, the third book in the Wicked series by Gregory Maguire.)
