Book Review: Into the Wild Nerd Yonder by Julie Halpern

There is something about a new school year that Jessie loves. Maybe it's the new school supplies tucked away in an old backpack, or the new clothes waiting for their debut, or the calm that she feels losing herself in math homework. Not that Jessie is a nerd, she just likes school. Plus with her best friends Bizza and Char, Jessie has a social life that can only be called normal, and her older brother Barrett is in a punk band, and his friends always let her hang out with them.

Sophomore year should be more of the same old for Jessie, however Bizza and Char decide to trade their old looks for new punk clothes. They also want to hang out with Barrett and his punk friends, including gorgeous Van, who Jessie has a (not so) secret crush on. When Bizza starts hanging out with Van, Jessie has had enough and starts reconsidering her friendships.

Enter Dottie and her band of Dungeons and Dragons playing friends. After a simple request to help them make contests for a role-playing weekend, Jessie finds herself saying yes to their request, the game and Henry. If only this all wasn't so...nerdy.

Into the Wild Nerd Yonder is a fun, light read that will resonate with anyone who has ever had a change in friends or hobbies. Jessie is a like-able teen who can't figure out where she fits in, and her crazy skirts might just inspire you to make a wild skirt of your own. Barrett will make you wish you had an older brother, and Bizza is a true frenemy.

Anyone who has had a falling out with a best friend, wondered what the future would bring or worried about being cool will enjoy Into the Wild Nerd Yonder.
