Book Review: X-Men Origins

Ever wondered where your favorite X-Men character came from? What happened when they first discovered that they were a mutant? And how did Professor X save them from themselves, and the government? This collection of short comics gives us the origin stories of six of the X-Men.

Colossus
Piotr is a young boy growing up in Siberia when his older brother, his hero, is killed in the service of the Russian army. Filled with rage and grief, he runs off into the snow - only to find that his anger has triggered the impossible - his skin has turned to metal. When his baby sister is born a few years later, he swears to protect her from everything, the way his brother coudn't protect him - but can he protect her from himself?

Jean Grey
When Jean saw her best friend Annie killed in a horrifying car accident, the trauma triggered her telekinetic powers, and she experienced Annie's death as though she was the one who was dying. Two years later, Jean can't have contact with anyone, for fear of hurting them with powers she can't control - until Professor X comes to her home and tells her he can help her become human again.

Beast
High school student Hank McCoy is super-smart, but definately not popular - until the football coach asks him to kick a field goal. He does - though the goal posts on the opposite end of the field. Everything's looking up, until a strange character calling himself Conquistador crashes Hank's after-game party, and demands that he break into a nuclear plant and steal a cold fusion reactor. Hank knows he can do it - but should he?

Sabretooth and Wolverine
Victor Creed and Logan have been trying to kill each other for decades - and every year on Logan's birthday, Victor shows up for battle. Throw in healing powers, adamantium claws, and a whole lot of bad attitude, and you've got some pretty epic fight scenes.

Gambit
Remy is a thief, his bride Bella Donna an assasin. Their marriage is supposed to end an ancient feud between the two guilds in New Orleans - until Bella Donna's cousin, Julien, interrupts the ceremony and challenges Remy to a duel. Turns out Remy has more than just sword fighting skills at his disposal...
