Book Review: Claire de Lune by Christine Johnson

Finding out she's a werewolf is not exactly the surprise Claire was looking for on her 16th birthday - she was actually kind of hoping for a car. Instead, on the first full moon after her birthday, her mom takes her out into the woods and introduces her to the pack - Beatrice, the alpha, her daughter Victoria, rebellious Zahlia, and quiet Judith and Katherine.

Her true lupine nature is a dark secret Claire must keep, no matter what - from her best friend, Emily, her au pair and surrogate big sister, Lisbeth, and especially from Matthew. Super-cute Matthew who she's had a crush on for ages, and who, before this whole werewolf thing, Claire thought might, maybe, finally be noticing her, in a girlfriendy kind of way - except his dad is Dr. Engle, top Federal Human Protection Agency researcher who's working hard on a 'cure' for lycanthropy. Which wouldn't be too awful - except Matthew's dad is also leading the hunt for the rogue werewolf that's hunting and viciously murdering people in Claire's small town.

As Claire struggles to deal with her new self, figure out how to keep her transformations secret and under control (NOT so easy), and to decide if she can find a way to be with Matthew and keep her best friend without giving away her secret, the rogue werewolf attacks escalate. With Emily sent away to her aunt's farm to protect her from the attacks, her mom refusing to talk to her about werewolf stuff until she's able to fully transform (a frustrating 3 months away), and Lisbeth keeping strange hours and secrets, Claire doesn't know who to turn to, or trust, except Matthew. But will he be able to accept Claire for who she truly is?

You'll definately want to throw Claire de Lune in your beach bag! With a great mystery, fun summer romance, and a big twist of the paranormal, this is one to read in one sitting, outside, with a big glass of lemonade. Just make sure the woods are a safe distance away and you're soaking up the sun, not the moonlight!
