Book Review: The Cardturner by Louis Sachar

Alton Richards knows three things about his Uncle Lester: he is old, he is rich, and he has taken a turn for the worse. Alton only met his uncle one time, when he was six, yet his parents insist that Lester is his favorite uncle, something they force him to say often.

Now 17, Alton is going to get more face time with Uncle Lester this summer when he is hired to be his card turner at his bridge games, four times a week. It's Alton's job to tell his blind uncle which cards are in his hand, and play the cards as instructed. Uncle Lester doesn't think Alton cares about bridge, or anything, but Alton is trying to figure out the crazy game of bridge.

Add a dash of family mystery, with the Castaneda family who Lester is divorced from, but who are still around, and a bit of romance with the previous cardturner Toni Castaneda, Alton might just have a more exciting story than he ever planned.

Whether you're a bridge master or a dabbler in go fish, there is something for everyone in The Cardturner. Louis Sachar tells his story so skillfully, that you don't realize that you are reading a book about bridge. Full of tidbits about the game, you'll want to start learning how to play after reading this book.

I'll see you @ the library!
