Book Review: How to Say Goodbye in Robot by Natalie Standiford

Bea (aka Robot Girl) and Jonah (aka Ghost Boy) were destined to be together. Just not, you know, together together.

When Bea moves to Baltimore from Ithaca, it means her senior year will be spent at an exclusive private school where everyone has known everyone else since kindergarten. Awesome. So when she sits next to fellow outsider Jonah (who's so pale his classmates dubbed him Ghost Boy in 7th grade), it's a friendship match made in heaven. Jonah introduces Bea to Night Light, a late-night AM radio show, which she instantly loves. They bond nightly over quirky regular callers like Kreplax, who claims he's from the future and frequently calls in conspiracy theories; Burt, who frequently gets banned from the show for swearing; and Larry, who doesn't really talk but loves to play old records on the air.

But when Jonah discovers a dark secret about his twin brother, Matthew, who died in a car crash with Jonah's mom when he was in grade school, their friendship is tested. Bea wants more than anything to help Jonah track down the truth about what happened to Matthew. But will Ghost Boy let even Robot Girl in to help?

How To Say Goodbye in Robot is without a doubt one of the best books I've read all year. It's hard to sum up the pure quirky awesomeness of this little book about friendship, but believe me, you won't regret picking it up. For everyone who's ever felt a little invisible (or maybe a lot), a little robot-y, or just different from everybody else, take a radio ride on this magic carpet of a debut novel @ the library.
