Book Review: Warped by Maurissa Guibord

When Tessa's antique bookstore owner dad wins a bunch of boxes of old, dusty books at an auction, she discovers a medieval unicorn tapestry and an ancient manuscript titled the Texo Vito in with the books. Oddly drawn to the tapestry, its jewel-bright colors, and the strangely lifelike unicorn and his golden, almost human eyes, she hangs it up in her room. Her best friend Opal thinks it looks rabid, but Tessa can't stop staring at it.

When Tessa begins hearing voices and having strange dreams and visions, she knows she's somehow linked to the tapestry. She just doesn't know why. The first time, at the auction, she blacked out for a minute and heard three voices - Through warp and weft, I bind thee. The second time, she has a vision - she is a 16th-century village girl in England, running into the Earl's woods to hide, watched by the Earl's gorgeous, golden-eyed son, William de Chaucy. A vision so real that is almost feels as though she was really there, 500 years ago.

A few days after the auction, a lawyer contacts Tessa's dad to tell him that there was a mistake - the box with the tapestry and the Texo Vito were accidentally included with the antique books, and the owner, Lila Gerome, wants them back. They've been in her family for generations, and she is willing to pay $10,000 for their safe return. Even though Tessa needs the money for college, she knows she can't bring herself to part with the tapestry or the manuscript. Especially after she goes to room and notices a loose thread on the tapestry. When she pulls it free, it feels like there's an earthquake in her room - and when she looks at the tapestry again, the unicorn is gone. Instead, there is a golden-eyed boy on her bedroom floor - and he's definitely not from the 21st century.

Maurissa Guibord weaves time travel, the Norn (also known as the three sisters of fate), witches and ancient curses, sweet romance, poisonous vipers, terrifying hunters, and even a dragon together into a tale that's fun and fast and full of passion and adventure. You'll fly right through this one as Tessa tries to find a way to get Will home, convince him she's not to blame for his entrapment or release, discover her link to the tapestry and the creatures woven into it (there's more hiding there than just a unicorn!), and keep the tapestry and the manuscript hidden from her dad and Lila. If you enjoy paranormal romance with tough heroines who can do their own rescuing, this one's for you!
