Top Ten Reasons to Read The Unwanteds by Lisa McMann

Did you hear that author Lisa McMann is coming to the West Allis Public Library on September 22nd at 4PM?

In preparation for her arrival, and to hopefully get you excited to read her new book The Unwanteds, here are 10 reasons you should read this awesome book. ( Don’t fret, Megan will write a true review of the book for you. We are both so excited about the book that we thought we'd do a double review of sorts for you!)

10. Twins! That’s right this book stars a set of twins who couldn't be more different. The book opens on the day of the Purge, where Alex will go do his death and Aaron (as a wanted) will train to be great in the land of Quill.

9. All of the “unwanteds” are put to death by being tossed into the Great Lake of Boiling Oil. However, what appears to be a lake of boiling oil is actually a magical land where those unwanteds are free to create the things that made them “unwanted” in the first place.

8. Artimé is one of the coolest fictional worlds. A mansion with as much rooms as needed? Magic chalkboards that talk and get you what you need? Every page is peppered with magical creatures, art and things that will keep you reading.

7. Creatures like the platyprot (think platypus + parrot) keep popping up. Not to mention Ms. Octavia, with her octopus tentacles and her crocodile teeth!

6. Creative arts turn to magic! All the kids who were unwanted have some serious artistic skills that they are able to turn into magic. Alex and his friends learn more about their art to become magic warriors. Imagine the possibilities of Turing your stories, paintings and songs into spells.

5. Alex has some great friends to learn more about art and magic with. Megan the musician, Lani the writer and Samheed the actor are all there with Alex. Trust me you will be laughing along with these guys as they learn how to navigate their new world and learn their new skills!

4. In addition to great friends, there is Mr. Today, the leader of Artimé. Mr. Today created the world to take care of the unwanted people of Quill, and is there to give the people of Artimé the freedom people in Quill lack.

3. The whole book builds up to a major battle between the two very different worlds. The people of Quill have no idea about the land of Artimé, and Mr. Today knows it’s only time before they are discovered and made to fight.

2. People are saying it's like a mix between Harry Potter and the Hunger Games. If you liked either of those books, you will love the magic world of The Unwanteds.

Katie (Waiting for Cryer's Cross and Gone to come to the library for me, so I can catch up on all my Lisa McMann reading before September 22nd!)
