Book Review: Cryer's Cross by Lisa McMann

Cryer's Cross is a small town in Montana with less than 200 people living there, nw minus since Tiffany Quinn disappeared last May. Everyone helped search for her, however she left without a trace leaving no clues to where she went or what could have happened.

With school starting, most people have moved on from Tiffany's disappearance. Kendall is looking forward to soccer with her (kind-of) boyfriend Nico and settling into a routine. She is also very aware of the empty desk where Tiffany used to sit in the classroom.

Kendall has a lot to look forward to her senior year in high school. She would like to go to a performing arts school, even though it would take her away from Nico and the life she has always known. Shortly after school starts, Nico starts acting strange. He's distant and forgetful, and then he goes missing too.

The town goes into search mode again, but now Kendall starts to think that maybe there is something more to Nico's disappearance than meets the eye. While most people think he ran off with Tiffany, Kendall knows he wouldn't do that. Sitting in his desk one day, she notices new graffiti and soon starts hearing his voice. Kendall realizes that there may be something with that desk that could lead her to Nico.

Creepy without being too scary, Cryer's Cross builds a mystery of the two missing students. Mainly told from Kendall's point of view, there is a more sinister voice telling the story in between chapters. Kendall is an unusual protagonist in that she has OCD, and this is what helps her figure out what may have happened. Helping Kendall out are new students Marlena and Jacián, one as a friend and one as maybe something more.

Readers looking for a spooky pre-Halloween read will enjoy Cryer's Cross by Lisa McMann.
