Book Review: Fateful by Claudia Gray

When she reaches America, ladies' maid Tess Davis knows one thing will be true - she will no longer be a servant to the wealthy Viscount Lisle.  Instead, she will take her meager two years' savings and walk away from Lady Regina's condescending disdain, drunken son Layton's crass rudeness, and the iron rule of cantankerous housekeeper Mrs. Horne.  Only Irene, Lady Regina's daughter, is kind to Tess - but Lady Regina is so cruel to her sweet, shy daughter, it is small comfort. Tess's escape to freedom is so close she can taste it - only a few days' more servitude on the maiden voyage of the grand ship Titanic.

But the night before Titanic sails, Tess finds herself the target of a terror she never imagined stalking through the dark streets of Southampton.  On a fruitless evening errand for Lady Regina, after dodging a frightening group of gentlemen, Tess is attacked by a creature that should not be in the middle of the city - a wolf.  Even stranger, she is saved by a handsome, obviously wealthy young man - a man who, after driving the wolf away, tells her if she doesn't run from him, she's dead.  Tess doesn't have to be told twice.

The next morning, Tess tries to forget her terrifying night encounter with the wolf.  Still, as she boards Titanic with a heavy trunk of Lisle family valuables, she knows she can feel malevolent eyes watching her.  Her suspicious are confirmed when a man with a Russian accent accosts her outside the Lisles' cabin.  A sleek hunter, Count Mikhail is a wealthy man with a taste for violence, and Tess doesn't know if he  is after her or the Lisles' wealth.  Once again, she is rescued by the young man with the beautiful chestnut curls - Alec - who appears out of nowhere and drives Mikhail away before abruptly leaving Tess alone.  Alec, Tess discovers, is Alexander Marlowe, son and heir of a wealthy, powerful American steel industrialist.  Though she is captivated by him, Tess knows that millionaires and ladies' maids do not mix.

But Mikhail is not to be denied.  That night, he corners Tess and drags her to the Turkish bath with him, where she expects to be beaten, murdered, or worse - but she does not expect the red wolf inside.  Or for Mikhail to transform into the same black wolf that attacked her in Southampton, brutally attacking the red wolf before shifting back and leaving a terrified Tess trapped with the injured wolf.  If Tess can survive the night, she knows she must discover what it is Mikhail wants from her - and what the gorgeous, forbidden Alec has to do with a Russian werewolf.

Full of passion, forbidden romance, terror and danger, and rich with the historical detail, glamour and glittering wealth of the first class passengers of the Titanic, Evernight author Claudia Gray has written a breathtaking paranormal romance set aboard the doomed RMS Titanic.  Tess is feisty, spirited, and innovative, and Alex is brooding, moody, absurdly wealthy and absolutely gorgeous.  If you love paranormal romance, this one's for you - and if not, well... come on! Werewolves on the Titanic?  Fabulous!
