Book Review: The Lucy Variations by Sarah Zarr

Lucy is doing her best to save Temnikova's life using the CPR skills she learned earlier that year. She knows as soon as Temnikova is pronounced dead that this will be her fault, even though according to the EMTs she probably couldn't have saved her. Beck-Moreaus do not accept failure very well.

It's been eight months since Lucy stopped playing the piano, and the role of star pianist has been handed down to her 10-year-old brother Gus. Now that his piano teacher has passed, a mere 7 weeks before a piano showcase, it's time for their mother and grandfather to find a new teacher for Gus. Enter Will Devi, young, attractive and with methods that are a bit counter to what grandpa would approve of. Will asks Lucy the one thing no one has dared to ask her since she did not perform in Prague: Do you ever want to play again?

Lucy's world gets flipped on it's head with this one question. Does she want to play again, can she play again, and what does it mean to play again? Her friend Reyna is only half there to support her, as she is dealing with her parents divorce. Her former life of traveling to competitions and showcases is so different from going to school day in and day out. And of course there is Gus to think about. Will is his teacher, but Lucy is glad to have such a supportive friend. What could possibly go wrong if she is friends with with Will too?

With the complexities of family relationships, mixed in with the confusion of friendships and the hints of first loves, heart breaks and betrayal The Lucy Variations hits on all the highs and lows of being 16.

Whether you are proficient in Beethoven's Sonatas or a plunker of Heart and Soul, The Lucy Variations will make you want to sit at a piano and at least try. While Lucy's life might seem out of reach with the family privilege and musical talent, her struggles with family, friends and figuring out who she wants to be will relate to any teen out there.

I'll see you @ the library!
