Book Review: Peanut by Ayun Halliday and Paul Hoppe

Peanut allergies can be deadly. One ingredient that touches peanuts, and BAM an allergic reaction or worse. Good thing Sadie made sure to tell all of her new classmates at her new high school about her peanut allergy. The kids at her old school never knew about her peanut allergy. Mostly because Sadie doesn't have a peanut allergy.

Moving to a new school can be tough, especially when you are a sophomore in high school. Most of the kids have been in the same school for years, have their friends and know each other. Sadie's friend from her old school sees this as an opportunity to reinvent herself. Sadie isn't so sure, until she sees a girl at a restaurant with a cool chunky bracelet, and finds out it's a medical alert bracelet for a deadly peanut allergy. A quick internet order later, Sadie has her own peanut allergy bracelet and a plan for a new identity.

Due to an essay about her peanut allergy, Sadie quickly makes some friends.including Zoo, the sweet boy who doesn't believe in technology and who just might be her boyfriend. Quickly news of her peanut allergy spreads which would be great, if she actually had a peanut allergy. Teachers and most of the students are supportive, but one false move when eating could expose her lie. Sadie has moments where she could come clean, but it's easier to live with her little lie.

A quick graphic novel read about fitting in, small lies that are a big deal  and the repercussions of not being honest. If you are new to graphic novels, and want a sweet, realistic book to read, Peanut is a good place to start. Fans of books by Raina Telgemeier (Smile, Drama) will enjoy Peanut!

I'll see you @ the library!
