NaNoWriMo: Set a Goal

Taken from NaNoWriMo Young Writers Program
Thanks for writing with us this November! Over the next week, we are going to get ready to start writing. I am a big fan of pre-writing. This can help keep your story on track, especially when you are trying to write a novel in a month.

Your first step is to set a word goal for the month. If you do the grown-up NaNoWriMo program, you are expected to write 50,000 words of a brand new novel from November 1-November 30. Of course, some of you are brand new writers, or just don't have the time with school and sports. So you get to set a goal!

How should you set your writing goal? Well, you can use the handy dandy chart that the people over at NaNoWriMo give us. If you are in 9th grade, and an intermediate writer, set your goal to 12,000 words. Or you can set a daily work goal, and then multiply that by 30 days. So if you thing you can write 500 words a day, you would set your goal to 15,000 words.

Take this goal setting seriously. You want to push yourself, and you want to be successful. Set a goal that's a bit of a reach, but not impossible. You can do this on your own, join the general program online, or get involved with the library's online community.

If you want to join our online classroom, send an email to WAPLTeens@mcfls.org and ask to join. This year, we are only hosting the program for writers in grades 6-12, and if you are younger than 13 you will need to get permission from a parent before you can join.

I'll see you @ the library!
Katie
